The Griffith VS White Bout
One thing I must say about this hilarious comedy is it feels like something the late John Hughes might have made. Only without silly teens in high school. It didn't look like such an enjoyable film from the teaser-trailers--but boy, did I love this movie. Also...don't confuse this with the four or five others that share the same title. This is a 2008 offering and miraculously, there was no other film by the same title released that year or since then.
David Mitchell (a strangely effeminate Paul Campbell) is a raging 'player', an almost sexually incontinent ladies' man. With essentially little life outside his dad's (hilarious Clint Howard) car dealership, what has he got to lose chasing the babes? Except that David's Grandpa Joe (Andy Griffith) won't forgive him for taking the job and sticking grandpa in a super-fine condominium.
This is a lapse that makes no sense in the story...but David visits his Grandpa Joe, who is despondent and threatens suicide because...
Another Ministers' Take
I just finished watching this movie with several seniors, and they (and I) loved it. The reality is that there is quite a bit of sexuality that goes on in retirement homes, but is not talked about. I think the movie is best enjoyed by adults (not something that most grandparents would want to watch with their grandkids!) but I did not find the movie offensive as did some others here -- and neither did the 70+ year old ladies I watched it with.
It's a romantic comedy, and ends with a humorous twist that sort of undermines the overall message of the movie, which I think is positive -- that we need do be seeking genuine companionship and not just game-playing.
As both a pastor and a filmmaker, I think we need to have family films but we also need stories that are for adults. When the only movies that we allow are acceptable for kindergarteners, we are leaving out a whole aspect of adult life -- and I think very few movies deal honestly in any way with the elderly...
Andy Griffith fan
I was so excited to get this movie, and thoroughly enjoyed watching the movie! I have never seen Anj in this kind of role, and it was absolutely hilarious!!! I think you will enjoy this movie, even if you're not an Andy Griffith fan, but then I can't imagine anyone not being a fan. :)
